In 2014 HKU conducted a study on 100,000 students aged 6 to 19. The study showed that the fitness of the Hong Kong students ranked poorly against the students of the United Kingdom, China, and Singapore (data below sourced from
SCMP and
ejinsight). The researchers attributed the poor fitness levels to the schools' and parents' sole focus on academic excellence and the resulting neglect of exercise. What's more troubling is the fact that only 8% of the students in Hong Kong exercise enough to meet the recommended amount of an hour a day. To further compound the problems, many students in Hong Kong can not afford co-circular activities, sports included. That's where we come in. We help by coaching weekly basketball, volleyball, and badminton sessions at different schools in Hong Kong.
